Samsung's First 1TB Hard Drive

Samsung's First 1TB Hard Drive

Computer-maker Samsung has announced that it is launching its first 1TB hard drive for laptops. The 2.5-inch hard drive, which is part of the Spinpoint-series, is being called the Spinpoint MT2 and it uses a 12.5mm form factor, as well as 333GB platters. If you need lots of storage space, this hard drive is your dream come true!

According to Samsung, the new hard drive works at 20% increased performance and uses about 4% less power than other similar hard drives currently on the market. However, reviewers say that the hard drive isn't very fast. It spins at just 5,400 RPM and features a last-generation 3.0Gb/s interface.

Even so, Samsung's vice president of storage marketing, I.C. Park, says the hard drive offers, "the largest capacity in what has previously been offered as an option for portable digital devices."

Generally, any hard drive that is part of the Spintpoint series features SilentSeek and NoiseGuard, which are used to drop noise levels during use. They also feature shock resistance of up to 400G while operating and 800G while not in use. You should expect these features in the new hard drive, along with Samsung's balancing technology, which, according to the company, offers "enhanced stability and reliability."

Unfortunately, with a thickness 12.5 mm, the hard drive is likely to present another problem: it won't fit into every laptop, so there may be a lot of disappointed people out there.

Samsung's N150 Netbooks Get New Colors

Samsung N150 CorbyThe N150 netbooks from Samsung quickly rose in popularity after being presented at CES 2010. The netbooks had a really impressive spec sheet. Packing an Intel Atom N450 (1.66GHz, 667MHz, 512KB) processor, Windows 7 Starter Edition, 1GB (DDR2/1GBx1) of memory, a 10.1-inch WSVGA (1024x600) anti-glare LED display, a 250GB SATA 5400RPM hard drive, an Intel GMA 3150 video card, HD audio, 2 stereo 1.5W speakers, microphone, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n WLAN, 10/100 Ethernet LAN, Bluetooth 2.1 + Enhanced Data Rate, 3 USB 2.0 slots (one with feature charging from PC off), headphone jack, microphone jack, 1 VGA port, 1 RJ45 port, 3-in-1 memory card reader (SD, SDHC, MMC), digital LiveCam webcam and a 6-cell lithium ion battery for up to 8.5 hours of battery life.

While the specs, obviously, are good, one thing the N150s didn't have was an intense visual appeal. Starting off the N150 netbooks came in standard black or white with a small red piping around the body. But Samsung has gone and added a splash of color to the devices. Instead of the plain old colors you can now get the N150 in red, blue, black matte, Bermuda Blue, Caribbean Yellow or Flamingo Pink. The color of the device is primarily on the top of the lid with a matching color stripe around the body of the computer. The borders of the screen as well as the keyboard and borders are white, or black if you get a black N150. In some countries, the N150 has even acquired the Corby brand as seen on Samsung's affordable mobile phones.

According to Vice President of Samsung's Information Technology Division Charles Barlocco, "The design and style are dominant features in the philosophy of Samsung. We wanted to join the technical performance of the N150 with the color, vivacity and style of Corby so you can always stay connected and not pass unnoticed. The Samsung N150 Corby show how attention to detail is a key component for Samsung and how we are always careful to discover new styles and trends and able to bring cutting-edge products."

The only difference to these new N150's is the color. All the specs and hardware is still the same. This seems like a good move for Samsung, especially with all the other companies making brightly colored laptops like Dell and there colorful Inspiron laptops. The colorful versions of the N150 should be going on sale in Italy first for a price of $379. The colorful N150s can also be found on Samsung's website.

Coming Soon: Samsung's Transparent Laptop

Coming Soon: Samsung's Transparent Laptop

As I sat here tonight, watching the Super Bowl while trying to get a little work done on my laptop, I thought to myself, wouldn't it be cool if there was a laptop that you could see through. Turns out, there is. Or there will be soon if Samsung has anything to do with it. The transparent laptop the company introduced last month at the Consumer Electronics Show is set to be released within about a year, the company has announced.

However, before the laptop with the transparent AMOLED display comes out, a media player, the IceTouch MP3 player, which plays radio, video, and displays photos, will be released. Not a lot is known about the media player, aside from the fact that you'll be able to see through the small two-inch display and it should sell for about $300.

The laptop is said to feature a 14-inch screen with the transparent AMOLED technology. Red Sullivan, the Vice President of Samsung's American audio and digital imaging marketing said he imagines all Samsung's audio-visual products will sooner feature the technology. "We want to be the first in this market."

There's no word on why Samsung is so fascinated by this AMOLED technology. Sure, it looks cool, but as far as the media player is concerned, I can see it being slightly useful when I'm out for a walk or jog and am in danger of tripping over something when engrossed in selecting a song or playlist, but the laptop? Unless I find myself working while trying to watch the Super Bowl again next year, it just seems like it'd be distracting and it wouldn't leave a lot of room for privacy.
